Zoroastrians Keep the Faith, and Keep Dwindling

Kersey H. Antia is a psychologist who specializes in panic disorders. In his private life, Mr. Antia dons a long white robe, slips a veil over his face and goes to work as a Zoroastrian priest, performing rituals passed down through a patrilineal chain of priests stretching back to ancient Persia. He realized that there is a palpable panic among Zoroastrians today, not only in the United States, but also around the world, that they are fighting the extinction of their faith, a monotheistic religion that most scholars say is at least 3,000 years old.The Zoroastrians’ mobility and adaptability has contributed to their demographic crisis. They assimilate and intermarry, virtually disappearing into their adopted cultures. And since the faith encourages opportunities for women, many Zoroastrian women are working professionals who, like many other professional women, have few children or none.Despite their shrinking numbers, Zoroastrians, who follow the Prophet Zarathustra, are divided over whether to accept intermarried families and converts and what defines a Zoroastrian. An effort to create a global organizing body fell apart two years ago after some priests accused the organizers of embracing “fake converts” and diluting traditions.

worship and prayer of zoroastrianism

Zoroastrian worship is not prescriptive. Its followers can choose whether they wish to pray and how.

Communal worship is usually centred around seasonal festivals  because the Zoroastrians have many, but there are other opportunities for worshipers to gather, such as the Navjote, the initiation ceremony where a child is accepted into the Zoroastrian fellowship.

Prayers:
Zoroastrians traditionally pray several times a day. Some wear a kusti, which is a cord knotted three times, to remind them of the maxim, 'Good Words, Good Thoughts, Good Deeds'. They wrap the kusti around the outside of a sudreh, a long, clean, white cotton shirt. They may engage in a purification ritual, such as the washing of the hands, then untie and then retie it while reciting prayers.Prayers are said facing the sun, fire or other source of light representing Ahura Mazda's divine light and energy.

 THE  ETERNAL FLAME:
Zoroastrians turn towards a flame  or a source of light while praying. At the heart of a Zoroastrian place of worship burns a fire and where possible the fire burns continuously symbolizing an eternal flame.

The temporal fire represents the spiritual flame, mainyu athra, within us and the ethical values of Asha: order, beneficence, honesty, fairness and justice.Fire represents many ideas and ideals of the faith. Fire is a source of light and light represents wisdom while darkness represents ignorance. Ignorance and darkness are the absence of wisdom and light.

Presentation of zoroastroanism

Zoroastrianism is possibly the world's oldest monotheistic religion. It focuses on the words of Zoroaster, and focuses on the cult of Ahura Mazda, the Lord of Wisdom. It also recognizes two opposing principles that represent good and evil, which is the Spirit Spenta Mainyu and Angra Mainyu Generous Spirit is destructive. Humans are intimately involved in this fight, keeping at bay the chaos and destruction through active goodness.
